4-Week Pottery Handbuilding Course for Adults & Teens

Create. Relax. Connect. Make Something You’ll Love to Keep.

Have you always wanted to try pottery but don’t want to start with the pottery wheel?
Our 4-Week Pottery Handbuilding Course is the perfect introduction to working with clay. Designed for beginners and open to adults and teens ages 16+, this hands-on course teaches you how to create beautiful, functional pottery using your hands and simple pottery tools — no wheel experience required.
Over four fun and creative weeks, you’ll learn the foundations of pinch, coil and slab handbuilding techniques, experiment with texture and surface decoration, and create your own unique ceramic pieces.

Whether you’re completely new to pottery or you’ve played with clay before, you’ll be guided step-by-step in a relaxed and supportive studio environment.

What You’ll Make
Throughout the four weeks, you’ll work on approximately 4–5 pottery projects, including:

Project 1 – Pinch Pot Mug or Small Bowl
Learn how to shape clay by hand and create your first functional pottery piece.

Project 2 – Slab-Built Tray or Plate
Learn how to roll, cut, join and shape slabs of clay while exploring texture and surface design.

Project 3 – Coil-Built Vase or Planter:
Discover how to build forms using coils and learn how to create strong, smooth joins.

Project 4 – Glazing & Finishing
Now it’s time to add colour and personality to your handmade pottery!

Once your projects have been bisque fired, you’ll learn how to prepare and glaze your pieces. Explore different colours, finishes and simple decorative techniques while deciding how you want your pottery to look.

Bonus Mini Project / Clay Exploration
Depending on class progress, students may create a small additional piece such as a spoon rest, ornament, incense holder or small dish.

Because pottery requires drying and kiln firing between stages, the instructor may adjust the project schedule according to the condition of the clay and the studio firing schedule.

What You’ll Learn
By the end of the course, you’ll understand the fundamentals of:
Pinch-pot construction
Slab building
Coil building
Joining and scoring clay
Creating even walls
Supporting and shaping forms
Adding handles and simple attachments
Texture and surface decoration
Underglaze and glaze application
Basic pottery care and studio safety
Preparing work for bisque and glaze firing

Attire
Keep nails short for wheel work
Bring an apron + small hand towel
Clean-Up: The final 15–20 minutes of class are dedicated to clean-up to maintain our shared studio."
